Joshua Kimmich has been named the new captain of the German national team by coach Julian Nagelsmann following İlkay Gundoğan's retirement from international football. The 29-year-old takes over the captain's armband after making 91 appearances for the German national team.

His debut with the Panzer team occurred under the guidance of Joachim Low by defeating Slovakia 3-1 in 2016.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann sees Kimmich as the right person to lead the team on the pitch. "Jo is the logical successor. He leads with his mentality," he said.

The Bayern Munich player will succeed his predecessors, namely legends Franz Beckenbauer, Lothar Matthaus, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Neuer as team captain.

Kimmich will lead his country for the first time as full-time captain in their Nations League opener against Hungary in Dusseldorf on Saturday (7/9/2024).

Antonio Rudiger and Kai Havertz will support Kimmich as vice-captains.
