Mohun Bagan Super Giant scripted history on February 23, 2025, by becoming the first team to win back-to-back Indian Super League (ISL) Shields.
The Mariners secured the 2024-25 League Winners' Shield in dramatic fashion with a last-minute 1-0 victory over Odisha FC at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata.
A stoppage-time goal from Dimitri Petratos sealed the win, ensuring Mohun Bagan finished at the top of the table with an unassailable 52 points.
With this triumph, they joined an elite list of teams that have won the ISL Shield since its introduction in the 2019-20 season.
Here’s a look at the past winners:
2019: FC Goa
The ISL Shield was introduced in the 2019-20 season, and FC Goa became its first-ever winners.
Under the guidance of Sergio Lobera, the Gaurs played an attacking brand of football, winning 12 out of their 18 matches and finishing the league stage with 39 points, four more than ATK.
This victory also earned them a historic spot in the AFC Champions League group stage.
2020: Mumbai City FC
Sergio Lobera continued his success in ISL by leading Mumbai City FC to the Shield in the 2020-21 season. Bringing in several of his former FC Goa players, he transformed Mumbai City into a dominant force.
They won 12 out of their 20 matches and finished with 40 points, edging ATK Mohun Bagan on a superior head-to-head record.
2021: Jamshedpur FC
Jamshedpur FC, under Owen Coyle, clinched their first-ever major ISL trophy by securing the Shield in 2021-22.
Inspired by the brilliance of Greg Stewart and a disciplined tactical setup, Jamshedpur registered a record-breaking 43 points in the league phase, winning 13 out of their 20 matches.
2022: Mumbai City FC
Mumbai City FC are the first team to win the ISL Shield twice. Under Des Buckingham, the Islanders put together a dominant campaign, securing 14 wins in 20 matches while scoring an incredible 54 goals.
They finished the season with 46 points and booked a spot in the AFC Champions League.
2023: Mohun Bagan Super Giant
Mohun Bagan SG clinched their maiden ISL Shield in the 2023-24 season. In a thrilling title race, they edged out Mumbai City FC to finish atop the league table.
This victory was a landmark moment for the club, as they established themselves among ISL’s elite.
2024 (Ongoing): Mohun Bagan SG
History was made in the 2024-25 season as Mohun Bagan SG became the first team to win consecutive ISL Shields.
Their title-winning campaign was marked by 16 victories, four draws, and six consecutive clean sheets—setting a new league record.
Their dramatic 1-0 victory over Odisha FC, sealed by Dimitri Petratos’ last-minute strike, ensured they finished on 52 points, making it impossible for second-placed FC Goa (42 points) to catch up.
Since its inception in 2019-20, the ISL Shield has become one of the most prestigious honors in Indian football, rewarding consistency and excellence over the course of the league season.
Mohun Bagan SG’s recent triumph cements their place in ISL history, but with competition getting fiercer every season, it remains to be seen which team will rise to the top next.
