Mumbai City FC fans threw cash at Lalengmawia Ralte, popularly known as Apuia, as he walked into the dressing room before the high-profile Indian Super League (ISL) clash between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Mumbai City FC.
The gesture came in response to Apuia’s pre-match statement, which many Mumbai City supporters perceived as disrespectful.
What caused the outrage?
Speaking ahead of the game, Apuia expressed gratitude towards Mumbai City but in a way that irked the club’s supporters.
He stated, "They (Mumbai City) helped me a lot to become a better player so that I can help Mohun Bagan now."
Many Mumbai City fans saw this as implying that their club was merely a stepping stone in his career, fueling frustration and resentment.
The reaction from the fans, throwing cash at him, was seen as a sarcastic way of questioning his loyalty and mocking his words.

Apuia, 23, made a high-profile switch to Mohun Bagan Super Giant in June 2024 after the club triggered his buy-out clause, reported to be around ₹1.6 crore, including taxes. His transfer was one of the most talked-about moves in Indian football, as he was registered outside the ISL salary cap under the new league guidelines that permit teams to register two players beyond the cap.
Despite the heated pre-match atmosphere, the game itself lived up to expectations, ending in an entertaining 2-2 draw. Mohun Bagan had already secured the league shield prior to this fixture, but Mumbai City were determined to put up a strong fight against their former star.
