Peru faces a crucial match in Montevideo, with its World Cup chances at stake. As reported by Infobae Perú, Óscar Ibáñez’s team will play at Estadio Centenario on Thursday, fully aware that only a win against Uruguay will keep their hopes alive. A loss or draw will lead to elimination from the 2026 South American qualifiers.

The current standings are clear. Venezuela is in seventh place with 18 points, followed by Bolivia with 17, and Peru in ninth place with 12 points. With just two matches left, the situation is tense. To stay in the race, Peru must win against Uruguay, while also needing Argentina to beat Venezuela and Colombia to hold Bolivia to a draw. This scenario would allow Peru to continue its fight in the final match against Paraguay in Lima.

The players understand the challenges ahead but are committed to giving their all. “We must not focus on the table. We know it’s tough, but we will keep fighting. They know Peru is not an easy team to play against. We’re going for the three points; it’s our only option,” said defender Carlos Zambrano, highlighting the team’s resolve.

Challenges such as injuries and suspensions add to the difficulties. Key players Paolo Guerrero, Edison Flores, and Alex Valera will miss the game, while Renato Tapia is suspended due to accumulated yellow cards. Ibáñez is likely to call up Erick Noriega, a young midfielder who has just debuted with Brazil’s Gremio and received favorable reviews from the media.

For Peru, the task is clear: win in Montevideo and hope for favorable results from other matches. A draw or loss against Uruguay would officially end their journey toward the World Cup in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
