According to Cooperativa.cl, Chile’s interim head coach Nicolás Córdova lowered expectations before Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. He emphasized that the focus should be on the long-term future of Chilean football rather than just the upcoming match.

“I don’t want to exclude myself from being here, but I’m not sure if my presence will impact things over these ten days. I should be judged on my work with the youth teams. We’ve stepped up to support the Federation, and I say this seriously, to help them make a calm decision in January about bringing in someone capable of helping us qualify, as we cannot continue without another World Cup qualification,” he said.

The coach stressed that his main goal is development. “My true role is to prepare players for the senior team, where winning is crucial. We will put out our best team and try our hardest, but the real conversation needs to go deeper. The key question is whether Chile is developing high-performance players, and that’s something we all need to consider,” he noted.

Córdova also called for broader reflection, mentioning the country’s Golden Generation. “Players don’t just appear; the Golden Generation didn’t happen by chance. It wasn’t just about five players. Tomorrow we face Uruguay and we will give it our all, but that’s not the main discussion we should be having,” he concluded.
