Argentina showed strong performance during the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, leading the CONMEBOL standings by nine points. However, a surprising loss to Ecuador has altered the situation. This defeat has allowed Lamine Yamal’s Spain to take over a notable record.

Argentina’s unexpected defeat on Matchday 18 of the CONMEBOL Qualifiers has caused them to lose their number one spot in the FIFA rankings, a position they held from April 2023 until September 2025. Now, Spain is in the lead, maintaining an unbeaten record in their first two UEFA qualifiers.

Spain has four games remaining in the qualifiers and could earn up to 100 points. In contrast, Argentina can only add 40 points from friendly matches in 2025. This situation gives Spain an advantage in the FIFA rankings as both teams prepare for the Finalissima in March 2026.

Journalist Gaston Edul reports that France has also moved ahead of Argentina in the FIFA rankings due to their successful streak in the UEFA World Cup Qualifiers. This has pushed Argentina to third place, but they still have a good chance to regain the second position in October.

Will Argentina’s defeat impact their readiness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

Despite their Conmebol dominance, Argentina’s recent loss has raised questions about their World Cup readiness. However, with qualification already secured, the impact of this loss may not reflect their true capabilities. A packed schedule and Nicolas Otamendi’s early red card affected their game plan. This issue seems situational rather than indicative of a larger problem.

Looking ahead to the Finalissima and the 2026 World Cup, Argentina will play friendly matches in October against Venezuela and Puerto Rico. They may also schedule additional friendlies in November to prepare. The match against Spain will be particularly important for gauging their competitiveness.
