The Northern Super League (NSL), Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league, is moving forward with plans to add a seventh club for the 2027 season, as announced by league president Christina Litz. This decision comes after a successful first season and aligns with the league’s growth strategy.
The NSL currently includes six founding clubs in key markets: Calgary Wild FC, Halifax Tides FC, Montreal Roses, Ottawa Rapid FC, AFC Toronto, and Vancouver Rise. The league aims to expand into Central and Western Canadian markets, with Whitecap Sports Group (WSG) tasked with identifying and evaluating potential investors.
“Our goal is to be among the top five leagues in the world, rooted in community and inspiring excellence on and off the pitch,” stated Diana Matheson, NSL founder and chief growth officer.
This announcement is part of the growing enthusiasm for women’s sports in Canada. The national team secured Olympic bronze medals in 2012 and 2016 and won gold in 2020, and Canada also hosted the significant 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
