Fedefut president Gerardo Paiz announced that Guatemala is considering moving its upcoming World Cup qualifying home matches from Estadio Cementos Progreso. The decision will ultimately be made by head coach Luis Fernando Tena and the players.

“It’s up to Professor Tena and the team to decide if the next home games will be played at a different stadium. They will choose between natural grass or synthetic turf. Ticket sales will not influence this decision,” Paiz said.

The discussion comes after a difficult start in Concacaf qualifying. Guatemala lost 1-0 to El Salvador at home and managed a 1-1 draw against Panama, which kept their hopes alive. Defender José “Caballo” Morales, who performed well in Panama, expressed the players’ preference: “Most of us are accustomed to natural grass, and it would benefit us. It would be great to play at El Trébol or at Pensativo.”

The top alternatives being considered are the Manuel Felipe Carrera Stadium, also known as El Trébol, and Estadio Pensativo in Antigua Guatemala. The federation anticipates reaching a final decision within days, following discussions with coach Tena. A change of venue could give Guatemala the boost it needs as it aims for the 2026 World Cup.
