El Salvador’s national team may face FIFA sanctions ahead of its World Cup Qualifiers against Panama and Guatemala in October, as reported by Guatefutbol.com. FIFA has started disciplinary proceedings following incidents during the home match against Suriname on September 8 in San Salvador.

Suriname’s team claimed that its players were subjected to racist abuse by a group of fans at Estadio Cuscatlán. The match ended with a 2-1 win for Suriname, and their complaint has been forwarded to FIFA, which is now considering possible penalties.

The Salvadoran Football Federation has stated it does not expect the stadium to be closed, which would be a significant blow given the efforts to ensure the venue is available for the October matches. Local officials believe a financial fine is the most likely outcome, although an official decision has not yet been made.

El Salvador will host Panama on October 10 and Guatemala on October 14 in San Salvador. The disciplinary decision will influence whether fans can attend these important qualifiers.
