Colombia will play against Mexico at AT&T Stadium in the first of two international friendlies in the United States. This match serves as an important test for Nestor Lorenzo’s team, and many are curious if James Rodriguez will participate in the game.

James Rodriguez will start for Colombia against Mexico, as head coach Néstor Lorenzo confirmed the captain’s inclusion along with Bayern Munich‘s Luis Diaz in the starting lineup.

“James, our captain, will play, and Lucho Díaz will play,” Lorenzo stated on Friday morning from the Colombian team’s hotel in Dallas. “I’ve been closely watching León. James had a strong start to the season, but his form declined as some players left. However, he is ready and committed to our strategy.”

The Argentine coach also highlighted that, as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup, James’ main focus should be on staying healthy and getting regular playing time with his club.

“The key is that he stays fit and plays regularly. We’ll adjust to maximize his contribution to the team. We have a strong group and a solid foundation for a successful World Cup,” Lorenzo added.

Two key absences for Colombia

Nestor Lorenzo made a surprising choice by leaving out midfielder Jhon Arias from Wolverhampton and forward Jhon Cordoba from Krasnodar for the upcoming friendlies in the United States. Both players had been regulars and featured in previous lineups.

However, Lorenzo explained the decisions were based on practicality. Arias is still adjusting to the Premier League, and his performances have not met expectations. Cordoba, on the other hand, has a long journey from Russia and is dealing with fatigue, so he has been excluded for now. Lorenzo anticipates both players will be available for the November FIFA window.
