Jorge Mendes, the agent of Lamine Yamal, spoke about the media buzz surrounding the 18-year-old in an interview with Mundo Deportivo: “I don’t understand all this fuss about Lamine Yamal. We have all been young at 18. As President Laporta said, we need to support him and help him as much as possible because he is a valuable asset for the club. Lamine is the player everyone is talking about; he is universally recognized as a great player, both for the present and for the future.” Mendes emphasized that the young Roja forward is focused on his performance: “Lamine knows exactly what he needs to do on and off the pitch, and that’s what he’s doing: focusing on his work quietly and speaking little. He is a very bright boy who learns every day. Speaking little and concentrating on his work is essential.”
The Portuguese agent also addressed Yamal’s talent and potential: “Lamine’s greatest asset is letting his game speak on the pitch; he does it like no one else, as we saw in the match against Club Brugge. In every game, he produces at least one masterpiece, something only a player destined for the highest peaks can achieve.” Mendes concluded by discussing role models for the young player: “Lamine is unique; he shouldn’t be compared to anyone, as he always says. However, it’s clear that players like Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are role models for everyone, due to their professionalism and exceptional performances. Iniesta was another great example for young players. Lamine must continue to progress to become the best player of the next two decades, not just the best for four or five years.”
