Liverpool experienced one of their worst performances in 70 years following a 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in a Champions League match at Anfield. Despite this significant loss, Liverpool manager Arne Slot mentioned that he feels secure in his position.
The match once again brought Liverpool’s defensive errors and weaknesses in team structure to the forefront. The atmosphere at Anfield soured as many spectators left the stadium before the final whistle, and the Liverpool players were met with boos. PSV established an early lead in the sixth minute with a penalty from Ivan Perisic. Although Dominic Szoboszlai managed to score an equalizer, subsequent goals from Guus Til and Couhaib Driouech increased PSV’s lead to 4-1. The visiting team repeatedly dismantled the hosts’ defense with effective counter-attacks.
This result is Liverpool’s ninth defeat in 12 matches across all tournaments. It is also the first time since the early 1990s that the club has lost three consecutive games by a margin of three or more goals. Furthermore, this marks the club’s biggest European home defeat and its first Champions League group stage loss at home in the last five seasons.
Speaking after the match, Slot acknowledged that the results were not satisfactory. However, he asserted that he has “a lot of support from the club management” and is not worried about being dismissed. He stressed that his primary focus is on improving performances rather than his own job security. The Dutch coach stated that the responsibility for this downturn is shared by both players and staff, insisting that “it is about the team” and that now is not the time to single out individual players for blame.
Nevertheless, the pressure on Slot is increasing. Liverpool, the current Premier League champions, find themselves in the lower half of the league table. The team has conceded 10 goals in their last three matches, including a 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest just a few days prior.
