Tensions have risen at Wolverhampton Wanderers after chairman Jeff Shi questioned the support the club has received from Wolverhampton Council. In response, council leader Stephen Simkins defended the local authority’s assistance to the club both historically and recently.

Wolverhampton Council Responds to Jeff Shi’s Claims

Council Counters Chairman’s Comments

Simkins reacted strongly to Shi’s remarks made in a BBC Radio West Midlands interview. Shi expressed his wish for “more support from the local authority” regarding the redevelopment of Molineux and the hosting of music events at the stadium.

Simkins publicly countered, stating:

“We were disappointed by Mr. Shi’s comments about a lack of support from the council. We have a long history of supporting our football club; our intervention in 1986 was crucial to saving the club from collapse.”

He emphasized that the council has consistently collaborated with the club, dismissing any notion of a lack of cooperation. Simkins cited several examples of the local authority’s efforts:

  • Recently worked with the club to attract significant investment to a jointly owned area outside the stadium.
  • Collaborated on the “Ambitious” Molineux Quarter Masterplan.
  • Part-funded a review on how Molineux could host major music events.

Simkins added, “Unfortunately, the club did not advance any of these plans, but we are ready to move forward when they are.”

Historical Support for Wolves

Simkins highlighted the council’s historical role in ensuring the club’s survival, particularly during the financial crisis of 1986. He described this intervention as vital for the club’s continued existence.

The council’s long-standing support for Wolves, including past interventions and ongoing cooperation, raises questions about Shi’s claims. These statements come at a time of escalating fan protests, with more planned for this weekend, adding to the tension during a period needing clarity and accountability.
