The Premier League has proven tough for Southampton, who are struggling with a long winless streak in the top division.

This past weekend, Russell Martin’s team lost 3-1 to Arsenal, despite taking an early lead that gave their supporters a brief glimmer of hope.

Southampton has not won a Premier League match in 20 months. How does this compare to the worst streaks in the league’s history? Here are the details.

Longest Winless Runs in Premier League History:

=4. Southampton – 20

12 March 2023 to Present (Ongoing)

Upon returning to the Premier League, they have drawn once and lost six of their first seven matches, making it hard to see when their next win might come.

=4. West Brom – 20

27 August 2017 to 2 January 2018

West Brom started the 2017/18 season with two wins, but could not secure another victory for five months. They managed to beat Brighton in January, but finished the season with just 31 points, leading to relegation.

=4. Sheffield United – 20

16 July 2020 to 2 January 2021

Sheffield United had a strong 2019 season, finishing ninth after promotion. However, they ended that season with three losses, which carried over into the next. They set a record by not winning until January 2021.

=4. Norwich City – 20

Norwich lost their last ten matches in the 2019/20 season, marking their fifth relegation from the Premier League. They returned to the top flight but did not win any of their first ten games, suffering heavy defeats. A win against Brentford saved them from equaling a club record.

3. Norwich City – 21

1 April 1995 to 13 November 2004

Norwich was relegated in 1995 after not winning any of their last eight games. They did not return for nine years and broke their 21-match winless streak by beating Southampton in November. Relegation followed that season.

12 December 2002 to 17 September 2005

Sunderland struggled in the 2002/03 season, finishing with 19 points. They managed to beat Liverpool in December but ended the season without another win, facing a 15-match losing streak. They returned to the top league a couple of years later but set a record with a 20-match losing streak, only breaking a 26-match winless run with a win against Middlesbrough.
