Bruno Fernandes’ injury is a major setback for Manchester United. As the team captain, he is their key player.
Last season, the 31-year-old was the top scorer and assist provider, both totaling 19.
This season, even after moving to a deeper position, he remains a crucial contributor at Old Trafford.
Currently, he is the club’s second-highest scorer with five goals, trailing only Bryan Mbeumo, who has seven, and he leads in assists with seven.
Manchester United are also without Fernandes’ natural replacement, Kobbie Mainoo, due to a calf injury.
Ruben Amorim has stated that Mainoo will return before Fernandes but he will miss the Boxing Day match against Newcastle United.
This requires a different strategy, and Amorim has shared his thoughts on how they will manage this weekend.
During a pre-match press conference, Amorim said, “It’s impossible to replace Bruno, but I told the team this morning.”
He added, “We need to focus on the positives. Many players need to step up.”
“This is a good opportunity for everyone to show that we can’t rely on just one player. Sometimes we depend on him for organization and creativity. Now, other players have to step up and demonstrate the leadership we need.”
In the second half of the recent Aston Villa match, Amorim gave Jack Fletcher his United debut, suggesting he might fill in for Fernandes.
Amorim commented on the situation: “We have other players, and we need to explore different playing styles.”
He added, “I think Jack Fletcher performed well, and that’s why we must give opportunities to him and others.”
With Manuel Ugarte underperforming at Old Trafford and Casemiro back from suspension, Amorim may lean more on academy players in the coming weeks.
