The club’s choices regarding goalkeeping have been influenced by the players’ form, confidence, and the tactical needs of manager Ruben Amorim.

One notable signing was intended to enhance Manchester United‘s play style and to provide a modern alternative to David de Gea.

Andre Onana transferred to Old Trafford in the summer of 2023 from Inter Milan for around £43.8 million, following his appearance in the Champions League final.

During his time at Manchester United, he made 72 appearances across all competitions, securing 17 clean sheets. However, his tenure was also marked by significant mistakes and inconsistencies.

By the beginning of the 2025–26 season, he had fallen down the ranks, appearing in just one of United’s first four league games.

In response, Amorim decided to make Altay Bayindir the starting goalkeeper and later signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18.2 million to solidify the position.

With two goalkeepers ahead of him, United chose to loan Onana out for the season in September.

He joined Trabzonspor on loan for the 2025–26 season and quickly became their primary goalkeeper.

His time in Turkey has seen him gain more match experience, improve his command of the area, and appear more relaxed compared to the intense situation he faced in Manchester.

This loan has sparked discussions about his long-term future, as Manchester United looks to shift their focus in goalkeeping.

Onana has hinted at the possibility of making his move to Trabzonspor permanent, as he feels happier in Turkey, according to reports.

This opportunity seems to have rejuvenated him, both on and off the field, and his statements indicate he might be ready to move on from Manchester United.

“I’m very happy, trust me. I’m living the best period of my life. I can’t complain, I’m very happy to be here,” Onana said regarding his experience in Trabzon.

He shared how he has built a bond with the fans, noting it took some time to adjust but now it’s something he appreciates.

“I love them, and I cherish this feeling. Their passion is wonderful. It’s hard to describe if you’re not here.

“My time here has been perfect for me. I’m glad to be here. It’s a different lifestyle, but it’s amazing.”

His performances have contributed to the club’s rise to third place in the league, sitting seven points behind leaders Galatasaray and four points behind second-placed Fenerbahce.
