Unai Emery thinks that other teams in the Premier League are stronger contenders than Aston Villa in the title race, despite Villa’s impressive form.
The Villans have extended their winning streak to 11 matches after they came from behind to defeat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The home team took the lead in the first half when Reece James’ corner accidentally went in off Joao Pedro’s leg.
Villa responded after halftime as Ollie Watkins scored twice, keeping them within three points of league leaders Arsenal.
Emery praised his team’s determination and mindset after Chelsea put them under pressure for most of the first half.
“We were disappointed with the way we were playing in the first half, but that’s normal against Chelsea at home,” he told Sky Sports.
“But 90 minutes is 90 minutes. In each match, we are gaining momentum and demonstrating our ability to perform well.
“In the second half, we improved and managed to secure a result because the players displayed their capacity, resilience, and dedication to the game plan.”
Emery shares unexpected views on the Premier League title race
Even with a substantial points advantage over Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United, Emery stated that those teams are tougher title competitors than Villa.
“We will assess it on day 34,” he said. “Right now we are on day 18. Our next match is day 19 against Arsenal, followed by Nottingham Forest next week.
“If the league ended against Arsenal, we would be in the title race, but teams like Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea are contending more than us.
“We are competing well and improving. Two months ago, we were in a different situation and concerned. Now, we are pleased.
“We’ve learned a lot during the past two months, and we remain humble and realistic about what we can achieve in each game and tournament.”
