After the defeat to Aston Villa, Chelsea’s hopes of winning the title experienced a significant setback. Villa is now in third place and is viewed as a serious contender.

Shearer has expressed support for Maresca, emphasizing that the club has not made enough moves in the transfer market.

On The Rest Is Football, Shearer discussed why he believes Chelsea lacks the necessary components to compete for the title.

When asked what could reintegrate them into the title race, he responded, “In my opinion, they need a top-quality center-back and an excellent center-forward. So, they are two players short.”

Despite Chelsea adding two strikers over the summer, Shearer doubts either is currently equipped to lead a title campaign.

He commented, “I’m not saying that Pedro and Delap can’t perform, but to reach that elite level and contend for the Premier League, they likely need a top-class center-forward.”

“Right now, they can beat any team on a good day, but consistency is key. There aren’t many players like Haaland available,” he added.

A world-class striker is something every club aims for. While Pedro may achieve those standards eventually, he is not a traditional number nine. Delap, still recovering from injury, hasn’t had the chance to fully demonstrate his abilities and remains quite young.

Recruitment gaps leave Chelsea short in key areas

Chelsea’s recruitment strategy has faced criticism again, and it seems warranted this time. Despite the money spent, major issues remain unresolved.

The injury to Levi Colwill has added to the challenges, revealing a broader concern about the lack of quality depth in that position.

The situation regarding forwards reflects another problem. Even with their financial muscle, Chelsea has mostly targeted young talent. While this strategy has had its successes, there are times when experience is more valuable than potential.

Bringing in a proven goalscorer could significantly enhance the team’s performance. A player who can contribute now, rather than someone who may only develop in a few seasons.
