Mikel Arteta has stated that Declan Rice is uncertain for Arsenal’s match against Bournemouth this weekend.
Rice missed the victory over Aston Villa due to a knee problem he suffered against Brighton on December 17. He is scheduled to train on Friday, but Arteta mentioned that the swelling in his knee has not reduced.
“Not yet. We have another session today. Let’s see how he comes through today and how he’s feeling, but it was too early that game for him,” Arteta said in his pre-match press conference.
Rice played the entire match against Brighton, even after hurting his knee. When asked if he regretted that decision, Arteta responded, “No, no, no – he managed to complete the game. That’s normal. Sometimes you get a hit, and with the adrenaline and being warm, you can push through.”
“Then the body reacts afterward, and it reacted more than we expected, unfortunately, and that’s where we are.”
There is some good news for Arsenal as Kai Havertz is expected to return to the bench soon. The German midfielder has made just 31 minutes of playing time this season but now adds depth to the team alongside Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus.
“It helps the team and each player to compete for their place. That’s what we want – options for the various games and the schedule we have,” Arteta said about Havertz’s return.
“So far we haven’t had many options, so we’re looking forward to having everyone fit and performing, allowing us to adjust player profiles during games to select the best players in good condition each time.”
