Philadelphia Union has transferred defender Kai Wagner to Birmingham City in the EFL Championship after seven seasons with the team.
The 28-year-old defender from Germany scored eight goals and provided 56 assists during his time at the Union. He played a key role in helping the team secure first place in the MLS regular-season standings twice and reach one MLS Cup final. He will join Birmingham City in the midst of their current season.
Union coach Bradley Carnell praised Wagner’s impact, stating, “The contributions Kai has made to this club over the last seven seasons have been nothing short of exceptional.”
Carnell added, “At this time, we are honoring Kai’s wishes to continue his career in Europe, as he feels this is the right step for him and his family. We wish him all the best and know he will continue to find success.”
Wagner was named an MLS All-Star three times and made the league’s Best XI twice.
