Rumors have surfaced that Liverpool is considering a surprising short-term loan for the Argentine star.

As Liverpool struggles through a tough 2026 season, new reports suggest the club might pursue one of the most astonishing moves in Premier League history. According to Spanish publication SPORT, Liverpool is one of the teams looking into a complex loan arrangement for Lionel Messi.

The 38-year-old is reportedly thinking about a temporary return to European football before this summer’s World Cup. With Major League Soccer currently on break until late February, Messi wants to stay match-fit and competitive as he prepares to defend Argentina’s title in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. A brief stint in a more competitive league could be beneficial.

Top MLS players have returned to Europe during the off-season before. David Beckham notably joined AC Milan on loan in early 2009, making a similar arrangement plausible for Messi, despite challenges for Inter Miami.

For Liverpool, the idea is attractive. The team is in need of creativity, and few players match Messi’s skill in breaking down defenses. Though the financial requirements would be significant, a six-month deal could be feasible, especially with recent transfer trends showing a shift from the club’s usual approach.

Following Diogo Jota’s unfortunate passing, Liverpool’s management has adopted a more aggressive market strategy, even breaking the British transfer record to acquire Alexander Isak. This willingness to take bold actions raises questions about whether the club might pursue a deal for Messi.

Why the deal remains highly unlikely

Despite the excitement, Messi’s own preferences pose a major hurdle. He has not shown a strong interest in playing in England, and a return to Barcelona seems more likely, despite the club’s ongoing financial issues.

Other options are less realistic. Another Spanish team is unlikely, and Italian clubs may not afford the necessary terms. A return to France or a switch to Germany also seems improbable, leaving the Premier League as the only option if Messi decides to leave Miami.

Nevertheless, the odds of Liverpool finalizing such a deal are slim. The club typically does not engage in such transfers, and it would require both a significant change in strategy and a shift in Messi’s mindset. Yet, given the unpredictability surrounding Anfield this season, the speculation continues.
