D.C. United has signed Romanian striker Louis Munteanu for a club-record fee of around $10 million.
The 23-year-old joins from CFR Cluj and is contracted until the end of the 2028-29 MLS season, with an option for 2029-30.
Munteanu will take one of the Designated Player spots on the roster, joining striker Tai Baribo, who was brought in last month from the Philadelphia Union.
“Louis is a talented young forward whose finishing skills and versatility will enhance our attack,” said Dr. Erkut Sogut, D.C.’s managing director of soccer operations. “His movement, hard work, and goal-scoring instincts will add new energy to our team.”
In his career, Munteanu scored 53 goals and provided 20 assists in 149 matches for CFR Cluj and Romania’s Farul Constanta. He was awarded the SuperLiga Romania Golden Boot and made the league’s Team of the Season in 2024-25.
“I am thrilled to join D.C. United. Washington is a fantastic city, and this opportunity means a lot to me. MLS presents a new and exciting challenge, and I am dedicated to helping the club succeed next season,” Munteanu said.
Munteanu and Baribo, who netted 16 goals last season, are expected to boost a United attack that scored the fewest goals (30) in the league in 2025.
D.C. will kick off the 2026 MLS season at home against the Philadelphia Union on February 21.
