As 2026 begins, Manchester United experiences significant changes.
The winter transfer window opened on January 1st, and following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, the club sacked manager Ruben Amorim this morning.
With a match against Turf Moor scheduled for January 7th, Darren Fletcher will lead the team’s preparations.
However, with no new permanent manager, the club’s strategy for the January transfer market is uncertain, particularly regarding their aim to secure a midfielder.
Details have now emerged about the financial impact of Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United. According to TalkSPORT, the total cost for his 14 months with the club is £27.35 million.
This figure breaks down into three main components:
First is the £9.5 million fee paid to Sporting CP for his release along with his coaching staff.
Next, there is his salary of £7.8 million earned since he joined in November 2024.
Finally, a £10.05 million compensation is due for the rest of his 18-month contract.
During his time at Old Trafford, Amorim recorded a win rate of just 36.92%. He was dismissed less than 18 hours after asserting his commitment to his contract.
Following the Leeds match, he stated, “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not just the coach.”
He added, “I know my name isn’t [Thomas] Tuchel, [Antonio] Conte, or [Jose] Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United.”
Amorim continued, “I won’t quit and will remain in my role until the board decides otherwise.”
He emphasized, “I want to be the manager, not merely the coach,” and confirmed that he would fulfill his commitment for the duration of his contract.
