Pep Guardiola praised Ruben Amorim as a “top manager” after the Portuguese coach was dismissed by Manchester United on Monday.
Amorim was let go following comments he made after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday. He stated that he was the team’s manager, not just the head coach, and hinted at internal disagreements.
Before Manchester City‘s match against Brighton on Wednesday, Guardiola noted that coaches are getting shorter tenures, referencing Chelsea’s recent decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca.
“It’s a fact. Less time. Like what happened with Enzo,” he noted.
“I won’t comment on it out of respect for the players and the clubs involved.”
“All I can say is Ruben is a top manager. The decision is made by our neighbours, but I wish Ruben all the best for the future.”
Guardiola expressed sympathy for Amorim, who faced multiple injuries and AFCON absences.
“If you don’t get results, it doesn’t matter,” he explained. “Every manager is hired for their ideas and fired for their results.”
“Sometimes, processes need time. United drew three games at home against teams like Everton and Bournemouth, and their opponents did really well, but they were close to Arsenal in results.”
“The gaps can be very small. In their last match, United had many absentees, and that makes things tough.”
“But as for the reasons behind these decisions? Honestly, I don’t know.”
