It has been 15 months since Erik ten Hag parted ways with Manchester United, where he was succeeded by Ruben Amorim, who also lost his job quickly.

Amorim’s firing followed what was then United’s worst Premier League season, finishing 8th, and a decline to 15th place a year later.

Ten Hag was then hired by Bayer Leverkusen in July 2025, but he was let go in September, marking the quickest turnaround of hiring and firing for the club.

Now, Ten Hag is returning to the Netherlands to take on the role of technical director at his former club, FC Twente.

FC Twente made the announcement on their official website, stating: “Erik ten Hag will be FC Twente’s technical director from next season.”

The statement added: “Erik ten Hag (55) will join FC Twente on February 1st, signing a contract until mid-2028.”

“He will succeed Jan Streuer, the current technical director, who has announced his retirement after this season, starting in the 2026-2027 season.”

“Ten Hag will begin contributing to FC Twente’s football organization ahead of the new season.”

“This is a return to where Ten Hag started his professional career. He had significant success as a player at FC Twente and took his first coaching roles there.”

In his first comments since accepting the position, Ten Hag said: “It feels wonderful and special to return to FC Twente, where I have been a supporter since I was young.”

He added: “My football and coaching careers began here. With my experience in youth development, team building, and elite sports culture, I aim to strengthen FC Twente’s technical foundation with the Supervisory Board, management, and staff, helping the club reach its potential as a regional leader.”
