Roy Keane claims Alex Ferguson still affects decisions at United
Keane’s comments have revived discussions about accountability for United’s struggles since Ferguson left, particularly with recent changes in the board and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s increasing role after his partial takeover.
In his usual direct manner, Keane stated to The Sun, “You see who’s making the decisions at Man United. Ferguson and David Gill are still around.”
He questioned, “Who’s actually making the choices? [Sir Jim] Ratcliffe? [Jason] Wilcox?”
The comments alluded to the influential figures at Old Trafford, including football director Jason Wilcox and new executives in charge of sports.
Keane suggested that Ferguson and former CEO David Gill still have indirect influence, despite the new ownership aiming for modernization.
For many, Keane’s remarks highlight a persistent issue: whether United has genuinely moved on from the Ferguson era.
Despite significant spending and many managerial changes, the club has not regained the dominance it had under the famous coach. Keane’s comments suggest that the club’s structure is more about nostalgia than real progress.
Roy Keane critiques leadership and decision-making at Man United
Keane elaborated, stating, “You’re assessing someone and thinking: ‘Is he the right fit for us?’ You need experience, of course, but you should also be able to look someone in the eye and ask: ‘Can you help us succeed?’”
His words reveal frustration at what he perceives as a lack of clarity and determination in United’s leadership.
In the last decade, the club has seen several managers, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag, without achieving lasting success.
Keane believes the club’s current board culture has substituted strong leadership with corporate uncertainty, resulting in poor performance on the field.
While Sir Alex Ferguson is still highly respected, Keane’s comments imply it’s time for Manchester United to truly move beyond his legacy in order to create a new era of success.
