Crystal Palace is complicating Liverpool‘s efforts to sign Marc Guehi as the January transfer window continues.

His name will remain a hot topic in transfer discussions throughout the month.

Recent reports indicate that Liverpool is considering a summer bid, while Manchester City is more likely to act soon.

This situation has left Liverpool in a challenging position as they seek defenders, and the latest update from Ben Jacobs does not bring much optimism.

A deal seemed likely last summer but fell through at the last moment. After Giovanni Leoni’s injury, Liverpool considered Guehi again for January.

However, the process has not been smooth.

Now, Crystal Palace seems to be reassessing Guehi’s market value.

Jacobs stated on talkSPORT: “Surprisingly, they are looking for more than the £35 million Liverpool agreed upon last summer, even with less time remaining on the contract.

“From Palace’s viewpoint, selling Guehi for £35 million requires finding a replacement in January. They believe that, just like City would need to pay more for Guehi, they would also incur extra costs to sign a suitable replacement.”

“Thus, the asking price remains high.”

With only six months left on Guehi’s contract, it seems unusual for the club to increase their price from last summer’s figure. However, this reflects the current transfer market situation.

The £35 million offer was reportedly Liverpool’s final bid for Guehi, indicating Anfield may not be his next destination.

Liverpool’s challenges in the transfer market raise concerns

The Reds have previously been known for savvy recruitment under Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, but this time is different.

If Guehi ends up with Manchester City or another club, it will raise questions about why a straightforward signing fell through twice in a year, especially considering Liverpool’s pressing need for a center-back now and looking ahead to next season.

If manager Arne Slot leads the team deep into European competition and faces injuries to Ibrahima Konate or Virgil van Dijk, any cost-saving measures now might seem insignificant compared to potential losses later.
