New Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior began his tenure with a strong performance, leading the team to a 5-1 victory against Charlton Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup.
Jorrel Hato scored the first goal at the Valley just before halftime, and Tosin Adarabioyo extended the lead shortly after the break.
Miles Leaburn reduced the deficit for Charlton, but Chelsea responded quickly with a goal from Marc Guiu. A strike from Pedro Neto and an Enzo Fernandez penalty in stoppage time sealed the win, making Rosenior the first Chelsea coach to start with a victory since 2016.
Liam Rosenior ‘excited for the future’ after Chelsea’s opening win
“It’s a great start, very professional,” he told TNT Sports. “The timing of our first goal was crucial, and Jorrel’s effort was brilliant. The players showcased their quality. It’s a strong foundation to build on, and we have a smaller game coming up on Wednesday!”
“Goals can change the flow of the game. Scoring when we did was key. I have a fantastic squad, and I’m thrilled with the starting players. Marc Guiu was outstanding and deserved his goal. There are many positives, but it’s important to stay grounded.”
Rosenior also acknowledged the Chelsea defense, which has struggled to keep clean sheets in recent matches.
“I was especially pleased with Jorrel, as he played in a different position and performed well. Tosin and Ben [Badiashile] were solid at the back, and young Josh [Acheampong] showed great potential. I was really happy with their contributions.”
“We have a busy two months ahead. The team has been very receptive to our approach, and if we maintain this level of work, I’m looking forward to what’s next.”
