Michael Carrick is likely to take the interim manager position at Manchester United.
Following the dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim, discussions have increased about his replacement.
Darren Fletcher, a former United player, temporarily filled the caretaker role but will return to manage the Under-18 team after a draw against Burnley and an FA Cup exit to Brighton and Hove Albion.
There had been strong connections to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returning to the club, but reports now suggest Carrick is the frontrunner.
This will mark Carrick’s first managerial role since he was let go by Middlesbrough in June 2025, after two and a half years with the club.
He had a successful playing career at United after joining from Tottenham Hotspur for £18.6 million in 2006.
Considered the successor to Roy Keane, Carrick wore the same number 16 jersey and won five Premier League titles during his time at United.
His trophy haul includes a UEFA Champions League medal, three League Cups, an FA Cup, and a Europa League title over 464 appearances.
Carrick also earned 34 caps for the England national team.
Throughout his career, he played alongside many football greats.
Should Carrick step into the interim role, he is looking to add former centre-back Jonathan Woodgate to his coaching team.
Alex Crook from TalkSPORT reported on X that Carrick wants to bring Woodgate on board.
They both started together in England’s 1-0 loss to Spain at Old Trafford in 2007.
Like Carrick, Woodgate also managed Middlesbrough, and their shared experiences could benefit them at Old Trafford.
