Wayne Rooney supports Michael Carrickās role as caretaker at Manchester United and has suggested a potential permanent replacement.
Carrick will manage Manchester United until the season ends, starting with the derby match against Manchester City at Old Trafford this Saturday.
Having played alongside Carrick, Rooney believes he is the āobvious choiceā to guide the team during this transition following Ruben Amorimās departure.
āIt is probably the obvious choice really because I donāt think there are any top managers available at the minute,ā Rooney mentioned on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast. āI think it is the right choice at this moment in time. It is a difficult task of course. Where Manchester United are at the minute is not a good place and Michael has to go in and steady the ship.ā
Manchester United plans to wait until summer for a permanent appointment. Former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has been mentioned as a possibility, although Rooney thinks Alonsoās ties to Liverpool could make that a challenge.
Rooney is more inclined to support Thomas Tuchel, hoping the German might be convinced to leave his position with England after the 2026 World Cup.
āAlonso did incredible at Leverkusen, and I think you have more chance of him waiting with [Liverpool manager Arne] Slot,ā Rooney stated. āTuchel is the one for me. He knows the Premier League and has won trophies. He is doing well with England. Time will tell.ā
