Everton’s ability to replace Ross Barkley remains questionable.

Barkley was a key player in midfield during his time at Everton, known for his physicality and willingness to challenge defenders head-on.

After Barkley transferred to Chelsea for £15m in January 2018, Everton shifted their focus to more technical players like Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph, Allan, Idrissa Gueye, and Tim Iroegbunam.

Now, Ruben Loftus-Cheek might be the player to restore that strong presence in Everton’s midfield.

Everton’s interest in Ruben Loftus-Cheek indicates a search for midfield strength

TEAMtalk has reported that intermediaries are offering Loftus-Cheek to Everton, as he looks for more consistent playing time. He has only started eight games in Serie A with AC Milan this season.

After joining from Chelsea for £15m in June 2023, Loftus-Cheek has adapted well but wants more playing time with the World Cup coming up.

His motivation is heightened by the fact that Thomas Tuchel, a former manager at Chelsea, now influences England’s squad selections.

David Moyes currently lacks a powerful midfielder like Barkley or Amadou Onana. The current players, including James Garner, Iroegbunam, Gueye, and Dwight McNeil, are not particularly known for their size and strength.

Thus, it makes sense for Everton to explore the possibility of acquiring Loftus-Cheek.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek joining Villa could lead to Ross Barkley’s return to Everton

TEAMtalk also mentions that Aston Villa has been offered Loftus-Cheek. Unai Emery, missing out on Conor Gallagher who joined Tottenham, might consider the move.

Barkley has played just seven Premier League matches for Villa this season, none as a starter, which could affect his position in the team.

Additionally, the 32-year-old’s contract expires this summer, making this month Aston Villa’s last chance to sell him before his deal ends.

If this deal happens, Everton may have the opportunity to bring Barkley back.
