Roy Keane and Sir Alex Ferguson’s relationship has been tense since Keane left Manchester United in 2005, and it remains unresolved.

Recently, Keane called Ferguson “hanging around like a bad smell” due to his ongoing attendance at matches, though there’s no indication that Ferguson is involved in club decisions.

In 2024, Ineos ended its financial support for Ferguson, cutting his significant ambassadorial salary as part of cost-saving efforts. Despite this, Keane believes Ferguson’s influence lingers.

Rio Ferdinand addressed this on BBC 5 Live, noting that Keane’s remarks have been disrespectful to several figures associated with the club, including Jonny Evans.

“I think he should influence the club, but I don’t think he has the influence that people think he has,” Ferdinand stated.

“He goes to games, by the way. Is there anyone more deserving of a seat in the stadium every week than Sir Alex Ferguson?”

“To say ‘hanging around like a bad smell’ is probably disrespectful to someone like Sir Alex Ferguson. They respect him. He was their manager, and most of their careers were spent alongside him.”

Roy Keane Critiques at Man Utd

Keane has been critical of many figures at United over the years. While many fans often agree with him, he sometimes crosses the line.

In 2020, he expressed frustration about former goalkeeper David de Gea: “I am sick to death of this goalkeeper,” Keane said, adding, “I would be fighting him at half-time.”

He continued, “This is a standard save for an established international goalkeeper. I wouldn’t even let him back on the bus after the match.”

Keane also criticized Bruno Fernandes in 2024, stating, “The first thing I’d do is change the captain. Bruno Fernandes is not captain material. He’s always moaning, the complete opposite of what a captain should be.”
