Liverpool fans may wish for another impactful player this January, similar to Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk transferred from Southampton and remains Liverpool’s most expensive January signing.

This year, however, the transfer activity has been quiet. While Van Dijk was a significant mid-season addition in 2018, it seems unlikely that will happen again this time.

The Reds have typically controlled their spending during winter windows under Fenway Sports Group (FSG). With Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi likely moving to Manchester City for over £80 million, this trend may continue.

Luis Suarez is one example of a significant signing. The Uruguayan forward moved from Ajax in 2011, with the fee reported at around £22.7 million.

In a list of the best January signings for Sports Illustrated, Phil Jones ranked Suarez first and Van Dijk third.

“Suarez made an incredible impact. The goals he scored changed how Liverpool played,” Jones said.

“Van Dijk has been great too. It’s tough to compare both players, but I think Suarez had a more significant impact.”

When asked about the ranking, Jones added, “I believe Suarez had a greater effect, even though Van Dijk has been amazing.”

Where is Luis Suarez now?

After leaving Anfield in 2014, the 38-year-old forward joined Barcelona, forming a powerful attacking trio with Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Following a stint in South America in 2022, Suarez reunited with Messi at Inter Miami two years later.

He continues to play for the MLS club, where he has contributed to their recent title successes.

Suarez has made 87 appearances for Inter Miami, scoring 42 goals and providing 29 assists.
