Pat Cash questions Carlos Alcaraz’s split with Juan Carlos Ferrero
Carlos Alcaraz ended his coaching relationship with Juan Carlos Ferrero in December, after achieving six Grand Slam titles together in seven years.
Although Alcaraz will keep his other coach, Samuel Lopez, Cash is concerned that this change could negatively impact Alcaraz’s season.
In a conversation with Tennis365, Cash stated, “This decision is puzzling. How can you part ways with someone who has guided you to such success?”
He added, “Notably, two of those titles were won last year. It’s not just about reaching one final; he won two!”
Cash emphasized that players seldom separate from their coaches when they are performing well, which raises concerns regarding Alcaraz’s future.
“It wasn’t a bad year; it might have been his best year, yet he decides to let his coach go. There are often managers and agents who influence players, which can create uncertainty and harm relationships.”
“I’m not saying this happened here. The details are unclear, but it’s worth considering if this was the right decision for Alcaraz.”
In 2026, Alcaraz has not shown any signs of weakness, having defeated Walton at the Australian Open following a victory over Jannik Sinner in South Korea.

Although Alcaraz won his first Australian Open match in straight sets, he described Walton as a challenging opponent.
In his press conference, he mentioned, “In the first set, there was just one break. I missed a couple of first serves. He played really well and was solid, looking for opportunities to attack.”
“In the second set, he found more chances to be aggressive. I felt I was playing well but lost focus for a moment during my serve, which made things tougher.”
“Overall, I’m just happy. I was prepared for a tough match, but his level of play was a bit unexpected. I had to adapt and am pleased with how I performed in my opening match of the season.”
Alcaraz is set to face Yannick Hanfmann in the second round on Tuesday, January 20.
