Arne Slot is optimistic that Mohamed Salah’s return will help Liverpool regain their scoring form.
Salah traveled with the Liverpool team to play against Marseille in the Champions League tonight, following his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations. He scored four goals during the tournament, ranking just behind Brahim Diaz, and is now ready to play for his club again.
Initially, Salah’s departure for the tournament was overshadowed by a disagreement with Slot. However, they reconciled, and Salah played against Brighton in the Premier League before heading to AFCON.
Before the match against Marseille, Slot expressed his happiness at having the 33-year-old back, hoping that Salah’s scoring ability will help break the team’s recent streak of draws.
“He left in a good situation for both him and us. We won against Brighton, and he participated, then went to AFCON where he continued to score goals,” Slot noted.
“While he didn’t win the tournament, he reached the semi-finals alongside strong teams. He is back with us now. I spoke to him today, and I’m glad to have him back. This season, I’ve had only two wingers who consider it their favorite position and have played over 100 minutes in the Premier League—Mo and Cody [Gakpo].
“We have other players who can perform well in those positions, like Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz. But I think if I ask Florian, he might not say left or right winger is his favorite spot. He can play there well, though. Jeremie mainly plays as a full-back but has shown he can be a threat on the right side, as he did in the last game against Burnley.
“Having Mo back is certainly advantageous because, in his absence, we created many chances but didn’t convert them all.
“I noticed today that he has scored 45 goals for Liverpool in the Champions League, while the next highest is Virgil van Dijk with five. It’s great to have him back, especially if he can return to that scoring level tomorrow evening.”
