Liverpool is in the lead to sign Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace, with the midfielder moving closer to a transfer to Anfield.

Wharton is reported to have accepted a five-year contract with Liverpool, who plan to target the England international in the summer transfer window.

This information comes from journalist Nicolo Schira, who mentions that Liverpool is optimistic about finalizing the deal.

A transfer is likely to be delayed until summer, as Crystal Palace will seek a high fee for the 21-year-old. Wharton is valued at over £60 million at Selhurst Park and is tied to the club until 2029.

Liverpool sees Wharton as the perfect deep-lying midfielder to enhance their squad. This season, he ranks in the top 10% of Premier League midfielders for tackles, expected assists, recoveries, and possession won in the final third.

Wharton could be the next significant player to leave Palace, after Marc Guehi’s transfer to Manchester City this month and the announcement from head coach Oliver Glasner that he will depart in the summer. Leading scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta has also shown interest in a move.

Manchester United and Manchester City have been linked with Wharton as well, but they are said to prefer Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.
