Newcastle United faces Manchester City this evening with a challenging history.
Turning around a two-goal deficit at the Etihad Stadium is a big ask for most teams, and Newcastle’s poor record at this location adds to the difficulty.
Newcastle hasn’t won at Manchester City since October 2014, when they secured a 2-0 victory in the League Cup. That night, Rolando Aarons scored first, and Moussa Sissoko secured the win for Newcastle.
Since then, there have been significant changes, including a relegation, promotion, a takeover, and two Champions League appearances. It has been a long time since Newcastle celebrated a victory at the Etihad.
That win was their first in 12 attempts and only their second in 22 tries since Manchester City moved to their current stadium in 2003.
This season, Newcastle has struggled on the road. They are currently 15th in the Premier League away table for 2025-26, with only two wins from 12 away matches. Only Leeds, Burnley, and Wolves have earned fewer points in away games.
On the other hand, Manchester City is at the top of the Premier League for home points. They have earned 29 points from 12 games, matched only by Arsenal, and only Spurs and Bayer Leverkusen have managed to win at the Etihad this season.
Newcastle’s victory in last season’s Carabao Cup brought great joy to their fans. The win over Liverpool at Wembley marked the club’s first domestic trophy in 70 years and their first overall since 1969, ending a lengthy wait.
Now, Newcastle needs an extraordinary performance to overcome the odds and secure a matchup with Arsenal next month.
While it seems like a tough challenge, even difficult records can be broken.
