Alan Shearer holds a legendary status at Newcastle United.
His impressive scoring record solidified this reputation. Shearer rejected offers from Manchester United, where he might have won more trophies, to return to Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers in a £15 million deal in 1996.
Though he did not win any trophies at St James’ Park, his remarkable performances over ten years at the club have made him a celebrated figure in the region.
Shearer scored 206 goals in 405 appearances for Newcastle in all competitions, surpassing Jackie Milburn’s previous club record.
His 201st goal, which broke the record, happened 20 years ago against Portsmouth when he skillfully beat the goalkeeper in front of The Gallowgate End.
Here, Shearer reflects on that memorable moment.
“He is Newcastle’s record goalscorer. He is the local hero.” 🎙️
