Celtic is set to sign Axel Oxlade-Chamberlain as a free agent, with an announcement expected today.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been a free agent since leaving Besiktas in August. The 32-year-old has kept fit by training with his former club, Arsenal.
Celtic is close to finalizing a six-month short-term deal for Oxlade-Chamberlain. Interim manager Martin O’Neill showed interest in him earlier this week.
“I’ve talked to him, but he likely has several options, possibly closer to London,” O’Neill said. “I’m keen on this move. I’m surprised others haven’t signed him. He seemed excited about what we discussed. He knows the club well and is a good friend of Joe Hart, who has spoken to him, though not officially on our behalf. We are interested, but if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.”
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Oxlade-Chamberlain is expected to finalize his move to Celtic on Friday. Before his time in Turkey, he played for Southampton, Arsenal, and Liverpool. He won three FA Cups with Arsenal and multiple trophies with Liverpool, including the Champions League and Premier League, despite facing injury challenges there. Oxlade-Chamberlain has also earned 35 caps for England, scoring seven goals.
