Arne Slot commented on officials needing to perform their duties after expressing concerns about decisions during Liverpool‘s loss to Manchester City.

Liverpool faced a 2-1 defeat at Anfield, giving up a late lead. Dominik Szoboszlai put Liverpool ahead with a stunning free-kick, but Manchester City equalized through Bernardo Silva and then Erling Haaland secured the win.

In a dramatic end to the match, City scored again on a counterattack after Liverpool pushed Alisson forward. Rayan Cherki found the net but the goal was ruled out by VAR.

The match was brought back for Szoboszlai’s foul on Haaland, which resulted in Szoboszlai being sent off. While Slot acknowledged the referees had to make that decision, he questioned why Marc Guehi wasn’t similarly penalized for a previous incident with Mohamed Salah.

“A lot has happened, which is typical in this match-up. We are disappointed not to get a result,” he said in an interview with BBC Match of the Day.

“In the first half, Manchester City were the stronger team but didn’t create many significant chances. They maintained more possession in our half. In the second half, we took control and had good opportunities. We scored first and limited their chances.

‘Just near the end, a deflected cross fell favorably for them, making it 1-1. We attempted to defend but lost the first header. Credit to Bernardo for his anticipation and finish.

“It’s becoming routine for us to concede in extra time; it happened again today.

Regarding the incident that led to Szoboszlai’s red card, he stated: “That’s not the main issue. Perhaps he could have let it go for a goal, but if that’s the rule, we must accept it.

“If we should discuss anything, it’s when Mo Salah was one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Anyone familiar with this stadium knows that’s a goal for Salah. Once again, the referee’s decision went against us. They have to do their job.”
