Jean-Philippe Mateta will not need surgery for his knee injury, but Oliver Glasner has not provided a return date for the Crystal Palace striker.
The Eagles had planned to transfer the France international to AC Milan at the end of January, but the deal fell through after he failed a medical examination.
Initially, there were reports that Mateta would need surgery and could be sidelined for three to four months. However, Glasner has indicated that the knee issue is not as serious as first thought.
Mateta to avoid knee surgery but no return timeline given
“Fortunately, he does not need surgery,” the coach said at a press conference before Palace’s Premier League match against Burnley on Wednesday night.
“The injury is not as severe as we feared, and several specialists agree that we can manage it better without surgery. He will be out for some time, but I can’t specify if it will be two, three, or four weeks. The fact that he does not need surgery is a positive sign, and we hope he returns soon.”
Mateta had hoped that a move to Milan would improve his chances of being selected for the France squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but now faces challenges in securing a spot.
“It was disappointing for him, but he is looking forward to the coming months,” Glasner added. “It’s good that a final decision has been made. Ultimately, he made the choice based on specialists’ recommendations, and he will undergo rehabilitation at the training facility.
“He wants to return as soon as possible and contribute to our goals. That’s his focus, and I believe that’s the best approach.”
Despite Mateta’s desire to leave Crystal Palace last month, Glasner does not doubt his commitment to the club for the remainder of the season.
“It’s important for him to know he will be a Crystal Palace player at least until the summer.
“Now that he doesn’t need surgery, we know what to focus on in the upcoming weeks. Clarity is crucial.
“I’m fully confident that JP will give his best once he returns to the pitch.”
“He deserves strong support, and I’m sure our fans will back him as they understand what he has contributed to Crystal Palace.”
