Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has stated that Yoane Wissa is unlikely to play in this weekend’s match against Manchester City after suffering a “nasty knock” during training.

The team will visit Eastlands this Saturday, just a few weeks after their 3-1 loss at the same location in the League Cup semi-finals.

Howe faces challenges with up to seven first-team players potentially sidelined due to injuries.

In his pre-match press conference, Howe gave updates on the injuries affecting Wissa, Bruno Guimarães, Tino Livramento, Sven Botman, and Lewis Miley.

Wissa missed the recent UEFA Champions League match against Qarabag, but Howe hopes he will be ready by next week.

“I don’t think he will be available, but he should be close for the Qarabag game. It was a nasty knock in training,” he mentioned.

Guimarães is currently in Brazil recovering from a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him out for two months.

“No major updates, he’s in Brazil. From the pictures I’ve seen, he’s following the games closely and showing his passion for the team,” Howe added.

Livramento is aiming to return from a hamstring issue in March. “Tino is making progress but I don’t expect he’ll be back before the early March timeline,” Howe noted.

Botman has not played in the last two matches due to a back issue but may participate this weekend, while Miley will be out for another two weeks with a dead leg.

“We’re hopeful for better news regarding Sven Botman; he might be involved in this game. Miley still has some recovery ahead,” Howe explained.

He also added, “Lewis had a dead leg that affected some muscle. It shouldn’t take more than a week or two at most, but we need to be cautious.”
