Pep Guardiola says he is not worried about the title race between Manchester City and Arsenal as his team gets ready to face Newcastle United in the Premier League.
A win against Newcastle on Saturday would cut Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to just two points. This comes after Arsenal drew 2-2 with Wolves earlier in the week.
City is close on the heels of Arsenal, who have won only two of their last seven matches in the league.
During a press conference before the match on Friday, Guardiola was asked multiple times about the title competition, but he said his focus is solely on the game against Newcastle.
“They were nine points ahead when we had a game in hand, so we’ll see the difference when everyone has played the same number of matches,” Guardiola said when discussing the gap between City and Arsenal.
“There will be many developments. I mentioned weeks ago that a lot will happen until the end of the season.”
He added: “Twelve more games is a lot. Right now, Newcastle is my only concern.”
“We will focus on the League cup final against Arsenal when it comes, but for now it’s all about Newcastle, then Leeds. That has always been our approach.”
“As a journalist, I get your desire to look ahead. But the priority is Newcastle, that’s it.”
Guardiola ‘couldn’t care less’ about title race with Arsenal
When asked what he discussed with his Man City squad after Arsenal dropped points, Guardiola said: “I didn’t talk about that at all. Just Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle.”
“I didn’t mention the standings, our position, or anything like that. I couldn’t care less. There are 12 games left.”
“If you ask me this question with two or three games to go, I will have a different answer. Right now, it’s an eternity with 12 games remaining.”
