Alexis Mac Allister has addressed Liverpool‘s lack of intensity despite their last-minute victory against Nottingham Forest.
Mac Allister scored the only goal in stoppage time, securing a 1-0 win at the City Ground. He found the net from close range, giving Liverpool the points after a challenging match.
Nottingham Forest controlled much of the first half while Liverpool struggled to make an impact. The Reds showed some improvement after halftime but needed a goal in the 97th minute to clinch the win.
Mac Allister, who previously had a goal ruled out by VAR moments before, was quick to respond to a loose ball off Virgil van Dijk’s header.
Reflecting on the match, Mac Allister shared his ‘mixed feelings’ about the outcome, acknowledging the win but noting the team’s subpar performance.
In an interview with Sky Sports, he said: “Mixed feelings, to be honest. I love scoring and winning, but I don’t think we played very well. It’s always nice when you win.”
His initial goal was disallowed after a clearance from defender Ola Aina deflected off him, resulting in a VAR review that ruled it out for an elbow touch. Mac Allister felt the decision was ‘harsh’ but was thankful for the late chance.
“It did (hit the elbow), but I feel like it’s a bit harsh. It’s a bit of both (with back) but I understand the rules,” he said. “I thought I would get another one. I told Hugo (Ekitike) this would be our goal. I’m glad that it went in.”
Mac Allister emphasized the need to review their performance, admitting the intensity was lacking but expressing relief at securing the win.
“Florian (Wirtz) is a really good player and very important for us. We tried a different formation and play style that didn’t quite work, but we’ll keep improving for the next game,” he added.
“We need points to qualify for the Champions League. Now it’s time to rest and focus on the upcoming match.”
