John Terry expressed his frustration at not being selected for Chelsea’s caretaker manager position after Enzo Maresca’s departure.

Calum McFarlane, the Under-21s coach, was appointed as caretaker following Maresca’s sudden exit in January, which was due to a disagreement with the club’s board.

Terry, who has a part-time role at the Chelsea academy, noted his disappointment at not being included in the coaching staff.

The 45-year-old has earned his UEFA Pro licence and previously served as an assistant manager at Aston Villa and Leicester City. McFarlane, who holds a UEFA B licence, was chosen instead due to his full-time commitment at Stamford Bridge.

Terry has previously spoken about his ambition to manage Chelsea in the future.

In a discussion on the Golf Life YouTube channel, Terry said, “Not annoyed, probably more frustrated, because I was certainly part of that Under‑21s group that went over.

“Even if I didn’t lead the team… Calum did well and got a result. I feel like I should have been included.”

“People need to make decisions. I appreciate when someone makes a choice, whether it’s a ‘yes’ or ‘no’. It seems the owners or the sporting directors decided not to include me, but I don’t understand why.”
