The agent of Florian Wirtz has shared his efforts to arrange a transfer to Real Madrid before the player moved to Liverpool.
Wirtz switched from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool last summer for a British record fee that may reach £116 million. The 22-year-old is regarded as one of Europe’s top young talents, having won consecutive Bundesliga Player of the Season awards at Leverkusen.
Bayern Munich and Manchester City also showed interest before Liverpool secured the midfielder in a record deal.
Wirtz’s agent, Volker Struth, revealed that he wanted Wirtz to join former Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid.
He reached out to the Spanish club about a potential transfer but learned that they couldn’t afford it. Struth expressed his hope for Wirtz to play at the Bernabeu in the future.
“When talks for a move to Liverpool or Bayern were happening, I called Xabi Alonso and said: ‘You have to take this player from Leverkusen to Real,’” Struth explained to German outlet Bild.
“Xabi replied: ‘You don’t need to tell me that; you should tell Florentino Perez (Real Madrid’s president).’”
“So, I sent him a message: ‘Dear Florentino, I’ve mentioned before that I have a player here I highly recommend. Florian Wirtz would improve any team in the world.’”
“That year, it wasn’t the right moment due to the squad and budget. Even Real Madrid doesn’t always have unlimited funds. But I still hope Florian will play there one day.”
