Cody Gakpo believes Liverpool can still have a successful season after their win against West Ham United on Saturday.

The Netherlands player scored the fourth goal in a 5-2 victory at Anfield, helping the team move into the top five of the Premier League.

Despite having struggled with set pieces earlier in the season, Liverpool excelled in this area, scoring three goals from corners in a strong first half.

With the league title no longer a possibility, Gakpo hopes their improved performance on set pieces will lead to success in the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup.

“It was a good afternoon,” he told Sky Sports. “We’re becoming a better team step by step. We faced challenges this season, but hopefully these recent games mark the start of something great.

“We worked hard, especially in the first half. We scored from two or maybe three set pieces. The final score was 5-2, but the match was much closer. They are a good team.

“As the season nears its end, we are still in the Champions League and FA Cup. There’s plenty to fight for. We hope to maintain our momentum and finish the season strong.

“When a game is tight, knowing you can score from a set piece is valuable, something we lacked earlier.”

Liverpool will face Galatasaray in the last-16 of the Champions League. Gakpo is looking forward to this rematch after their 1-0 loss in Istanbul earlier this season.

He said: “We are ready for a challenge. We have already faced them this season and know what to expect.”
