Pep Guardiola praised Rayan Cherki for having his “best game” since joining Manchester City in their 1-0 win against Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday evening.
Antoine Semenyo scored the match’s only goal, finishing off a low cross from Rayan Ait-Nouri during first-half stoppage time.
This victory keeps City just two points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, prompting Guardiola to urge his players to maintain the right mindset for the remainder of the season.
Pep Guardiola praises Rayan Cherki’s performance
“Cherki had his best game,” he stated to BBC Match of the Day after the match. “He was solid and aggressive with the ball. The entire team showed great commitment and followed the game plan. Now, at this stage of the season, it’s crucial to focus on the right mentality.”
“After nine months, everyone knows their role. The gap for Champions League qualification is significant, which is important for the club. We are the only English club that has been consistently in the Champions League for 10-11 years.”
Erling Haaland missed the trip to Leeds due to a minor injury sustained in training earlier in the week, but Guardiola minimized concerns about the issue.
“We don’t have spies in our training centre sharing information,” he said. “I don’t think it’s serious. We will see.”
When asked about the duration of Haaland’s absence, Guardiola said, “I don’t know.”
Manchester City will play again next Wednesday, hosting Nottingham Forest at Eastlands.
