Interim Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has expressed concern that the level of physicality during set pieces in the Premier League has increased excessively, but he does not have a solution.
This issue is gaining attention in the football world as teams look to set plays as a key method for scoring goals this season.
Players are becoming more physical in the box during these moments, leading to criticism that the quality of the game is suffering.
Liverpool‘s head coach Arne Slot has stated that this trend has taken the enjoyment out of watching English football, while Brighton’s manager Fabian Hurzeler has called for stricter regulations on set pieces and has criticized Arsenal for wasting time.
Ahead of Wednesday’s match against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, Carrick noted that it’s not surprising that more teams are adopting a physical approach, given that the rules allow for it.
“I think it’s gone too far,” he said. “Not long ago, we were told that you couldn’t touch anyone in the box and that actions would be limited. But this has gradually changed, and the success of corners has encouraged more teams to adopt this strategy.
“It makes sense why many teams are doing it. As a sport, it doesn’t feel like we’ve found the right balance. I don’t know what the answer is; that’s not for me to decide.
“For now, we have to deal with what exists, and if it’s permitted, then we must adapt to it.”
