Pep Guardiola is optimistic that Manchester City midfielder Rodri is returning to peak form after his recovery from a significant ACL injury.

Rodri’s 2024-25 season was heavily affected by a serious knee injury, with his return coming only in the late weeks of the season.

The 29-year-old’s long break followed a standout period in his career, during which he played a key role in Manchester City winning the Premier League, helped Spain secure the European Championship, and was awarded the Ballon d’Or.

This season, Rodri’s playing time has been managed carefully, but he has exhibited positive signs in recent matches.

Before the upcoming FA Cup match against Newcastle, Guardiola shared with the media his belief that Rodri is regaining his former self.

“Finally, it’s happening as we hoped since his return. He has made significant progress [toward his previous level] and has maintained a consistent routine of playing,” he said.

“However, we have several matches in March, including long away trips. Fatigue is a factor. We travel to Madrid and then back to London, which involves a four to five-hour journey to the hotel.

“Thus, we need to utilize the entire squad; otherwise, it will be challenging to maintain our desired playing rhythm. Step by step, he is improving. Everyone is aware of it.”
